We have explored first hand how education can affect creativity. Being educational engagers we have
worked within the intersection. Our direct experiences and navigations through in and around education
have created the need for a platform where we alongside others can directly begin to design, create and
methodologically analyse the structures of today.
Due to our current educational climate being in a state of flux and having to consider our own educational
environments we have developed our own educational structures within our homes. Contemplating our
own experiences on the MA Art and Education Practices course and how it has enabled us to develop
this contemplation and questioning on educational models. We have drawn from our previous
experiences with our separate Undergraduate courses which drew on structures, physiological
experiences within environments and peoples connectivity within and without boundaries.
Contemplating further and emerging our previous knowledge we can consider; rhizomes of the
educational model and Traditional education that causes flatness, dullness, rigidity and unenthusiasm.
Drawing our research areas to books such as the tyranny of structurelessness by Jo Freeman and
Institutional Attitudes - instituting art in a flat world by Pascal Gielen. Exploring how education can exist
within non traditionalist environments and the psychology of space through speculative design. Drawing
on the concept of MESH ( https://mesh.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page ) and how this can be implemented
further through an expanded field of creativity to develop further accessibility beyond emerging artists.
This grant will give us the opportunity to begin implementing the changes we believe is imperative to the
future of the educational model through the use of accessible lessons/lectures, a portable learning
structure (ie van/bus, pop up) and resource building. Creating accessibility through space and a place for
exploration and investigation. Boundaries can be investigated, cut up and pasted creating new zones for
art educators and students alike.
We are the developers of an extended environment for students and the public to participate, experiment,
grow, develop, investigate into topics, ideas, spaces and places. There is no fixed facility, it is in motion. A
readymade; it is ambiguous, a dispersed form, constantly growing and expanding. This root forms the
educational model down to bare form and provides room for students and engagers to produce context.
This Space is Dispersed
This Portability is Engaged
This allows Growth
Incorporating our own existing investigations on alternative learning environments. Helen will project this
through the lens of eco-phenomenology, horizontalism, rhizomes and engagement through environment.
Rebecca will manifest this into the investigation into dispersion, experimental publication and inter -
connectivity through engagement, exchange and knowledge production.
Through exploring the educational mode and what it means to learn; We have entwined our personal
understanding and direct experiences within today's educational model and what it means when that
model is shaken up. Exposing and revealing the gaps in the environment that are surrounded by the
freedom of expression that exists within. This space is made and unmade, it is in flux and is portable like
the equipment used .It is a projection of this moment in time. The ideas, conversations and work in
progress that steer us towards learning. This twisting and warping of the territory is expanding it into the
field of hybridity, connectivity and growth.
Through this collaboration we will engage together looking into how knowledge can be developed and
exchanged, how narratives can be explored and disseminated through experimental publication,
workshops, resources and online platforms such as YouTube. We intend to do this through the creation of
a portable space/s. Utilising workshop development, resources development, community development
and materials.
Content within these created spaces will include but will not be limited to mapping environments, Prompts
of space, reflections of experiences, walks within and around environments whether that be natural or
civic. These topics will not be limited to a specific age or group but will be adaptable, interchangeable and
flexible to any group. Philosophy, eco-phenomenology, autoethnography and autonomous knowledge.
Speculating on flatness and hierarchy within real life experiences on and offline.
How will this implement our careers for the future?
Transitioning our position from students to educational art practitioners creating a stepping ground and
extension of current research ideas to create and develop this platform so that it can be widely portable
and shareable. Directly transforming our careers within alternative education to continue to engage
communities within art and expand art education further through the use of this created platform. Based in
and around Birmingham this will continue the connection between BCU school of art, Birmingham's wider
artist network and local communities promoting and engaging art education.
