"An Examination of Ecological Psychology and Phenomenology and their Applicability to the Study of Landscape Aesthetics"

Abstract

Often have I argued about original dilemma in the field of architecture and its research in terms of a long standing dichotomy such as art/science, form/meaning, design/research, people/environment, individual/social, private/pubic, and otherwise. This binary opposition may not belong only to architecture but to other applied sciences in terms of a dichotomy of theory and practice, but it is obvious that architecture and environmental design fields have paid a particular attention to the synthesis of such conflicting concepts because they deal with any matters of both human and environment. Besides, architectural theories have been also both positive and normative, influenced by contemporaneous philosophical ideas because they all have concepts of the human beings and those of nature (Lang 1991, p.58). It seems that we can’t build theories without borrowing philosophical ideas in terms of the world, beings, and meanings.
