Conflict is a major contributor to anthropogenic changes to our environment. Violence against the environment may be slow, indirect, and diffused, but it is enmeshed in colonial and military violence, and forms of domination. From mass killings by Israeli forces in occupied Gaza, to a decades-long armed conflict in Colombia, changes in nature have been both the cause and consequence of human conflicts. This entanglement with conflict defines the Centre for Contemporary Nature’s approach to the environment, and what it refers to as ‘Contemporary Nature’.
