“she stands as still as a statue” That moment when you get overwhelmed by fear and that pure second that the fear kicks in, when you have that inhalation of breath followed by a racing heart. I wanted to represent that fear and particularly relate it back to my automatonophobia which links closely to the title of my piece. I wanted to do this by immersion visually and spatially, creating a visual representation of the metaphor I have chosen and the meaning behind it. I linked object to personal memory and perceptual thoughts throughout the project particularly in my creative chooses and outcomes. I began to explore the material in which I wanted to represent the freezing motion and that the fear creates, I felt that plaster was the medium I was to use due to its freezing motion, flexibility to mould and change. I choose to pigment the plaster and the colour in particular due to the fact my phobia has an element where I find myself more frightened of the darker statues than the lighter ones, so I felt it important to add that element of colour to show the gradient of fear in each layer. I wanted the boxes to create an impact on the audience and feel overwhelming, I achieved this by designing 3 handmade outer boxes that began at 3ft high by 2ft wide, 4 ½ft high by 2ft wide and 6ft high by 2ft wide. The height and width choose was chosen by a factor of many things, normal human width is usually 2ft hence the width choose. The height choose was chosen in a gradient like fashion, starting with a tall human size (6ft) and gradually getting smaller to something of a waist size. This represents the gradual decline in fear and also create an immersive effect for the audience.
